DIARY OF AN ATONEMENT CHILD 1 By Beebah

I was just moving into adolescence, happy to see the grown up in the mirror, she had grown so big that I began to imagine if the mirror wasn’t deceiving me yet.
Slimmer waist had started coming up, a bigger hip and a rounder chest, they were protruding.
I smiled at the pretty face that I never noticed and the lovely set of teeth. It’s a new world I couldn’t imagine yet what it feels like and how best I can manage it.
In few months I will be a teenager, Wow! the feeling got me feeling real good that I couldn’t just wait  to turn 13.
One more thing, a whole lot of my friends  have started having red flags, that’s their menstrual periods, I feel odd and envious of them. I want to pack sanitary pads in my  bags and go change every minutes in the toilet, I want to tie cardigans around my waist, I want to gist about the menstrual pains and how they tag it as “MP”, I just want to do all of this and feel really big.
It’s my 13th birthday and i have started a countdown on my calendar already and sadly expecting my menstrual period so bad.
As I expected there came a really unforgettable tragic moment of my whole life.
Did I tell you I was the most intelligent in my class, Yes I was and I was also the most outspoken so I represent my school for international debate competitions.
I had gone to several states like Abuja, Imo, Rivers, Cross River, Lagos, Abia, Delta etc.
It was another competition and this time it was in Abuja again, I was excited as the last competition we had in Abuja was a very interesting one, and I was hoping to go there again.
She debate was going to last for a week and it was a new topic for each week. It was a five man team and luckily I had my class mate going with me, her name is Zekiyah, Oops I for got to tell you my name, my bad, I am Akeelah Iremide Williams.
The drive to ABJ was a long one from Lagos but it was fun all the way.
We got to a check point and our driver stopped for the men in uniform.
They asked for our documents and our destination, as we were explaining we heard gunshots from the bush, then we knew they were fake policemen, they were thieves!.
At this stage we were really terrified, I could hear people scream so loud and I couldn’t just scream because my voice was held up, I forced myself to shout but they weren’t coming out.
The men were looking like a hungry monster, at a point I couldn’t see the teacher that followed us, he had ran away, even the driver was no where to be found, we were left alone with the monsters as they held us down and some of them ran after the driver and our teacher, now all was looking like a nightmare, I was wondering what will happen next as they searched the bus and pick every valuable asset we had packed in our bags.
I watched the other girl weep uncontrollably and saw some struggling to flee as they were held so tight by the monsters. After they had searched and searched , they looked at us like they were going to eat us all up.
One of them who appeared to be the leader of the gang said: ” Since their master don run comot, I dey think say we fit use this small chickens for supper”, on hearing this I was really scared, Were they carnivore?, Do they eat people alive?…………
